“It’s Britney, bitch!”
Britney Spears is a household name. Everybody already knows who she is.
Starting out from Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, the blonde bombshell has dominated the pop music industry for over three decades. She is one of the world’s best-selling artists, inspiring millions of hardcore fans through her musical talent and photogenic good looks.
A Star Is Born
Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981. She spent her early days in Kentwood, Louisiana. Britney’s mother Lynne worked as a school teacher. Her dad was a building contractor. The middle child, she had an older brother (Bryan) and a younger sister (Jamie Lynne).
Growing up in a Southern Baptist family, Britney was raised in a churchy upbringing. Sex was frowned upon, which only made it more appealing! For Britney, the rebellious young girl was determined to achieve superstardom—by any means necessary.
With her mother’s support, Spears started performing at local talent shows. Quickly, it became clear that the young girl was a star-in-the making.
As the prizes piled up, Britney and her mother traveled to Atlanta. There, she did auditions to join the Mickey Mouse Club. Already at age 8, Britney showed skills well beyond her years. She could sing, dance, and do gymnastics like a professional.
Although she smashed the audition, Britney was still too young to join the Disney cast. So she moved to New York City with her mother, where she starred in the Off-Broadway musical Ruthless. There, she started taking professional classes. After two years in the Big Apple, Britney returned to Orlando, where she picked up her long-awaited Disney gig.
Disney Girl
At Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, Britney joined an all-star cast. The legendary Class of 1993 included Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling. These were probably the most talented group of kids ever assembled for a kid’s show. It was almost like a SNL for kids.
During her time with Disney, the kid Britney learned all the tricks of the trade. She got priceless experience in live performance. She made music videos and participated in sketch comedy.
When Disney canceled the Club in 1995, Spears returned home to Kentwood. But with such valuable experience under her belt, the girl was eager to launch her showbiz career.
Princess of Pop
Britney’s mother hired a manager named Larry Rudolph. He soon landed the girl in an audition at Jive Records.
As an energetic 16-year-old, Britney was perfect for what the studios wanted: a Pop Princess.
Britney wasn’t just good looks. She worked harder than anybody else. She was willing to do all the shows, and sell herself as the product. She was also full of promising talent, just waiting to be tapped.
But to be a star, Britney knew she needed a hit single. After weeks in the studio with Max Martin, the hit maker behind the famous Backstreet Boys, Britney and Jive were convinced they had a hit on their hands: “Baby, One More Time.”
“One More Time”
“One More Time” became a legendary Britney hit, which instantly turned her into a superstar. Clearly, she wasn’t just some manufactured star. She had the talent and charisma to pull off what no other teen idol could do.
In January of 1999, the song appeared in stores. Audiences quickly fell in love with Britney’s catchy pop tune and teasing refrain.
But when the music video aired on MTV, it immediately turned Britney into America’s hottest teen idol. Wearing a sexy schoolgirl uniform, the 17-year-old Britney was hot as can be! She became every guy’s fantasy.
Britney’s debut album, Baby One More Time, became one of pop music’s greatest albums. Selling over 14 million copies, it was one of the industry’s last “superstar” albums. Everybody loved Britney, not just teenagers. Older guys loved her, and moms were singing along too.
She quickly followed up her smash success with her second album, Oops I Did It Again, in 2000. Again, it was a legendary masterpiece of pop music.
Britney Mania
By the turn of the century, Britney was America’s biggest celebrity. Thanks to her endless exposure in the media, her celebrity empire was suddenly making millions.
Britney presented herself as a clean-cut Christian girl. When she started dating Justin Timberlake, the teenage bombshell made a point of saying that she was waiting for marriage to have sex.
But the sex goddess was, in her words, “not so innocent.” Like Madonna before her, Britney learned how to turn controversy into an advantage.
Britney
At the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, Spears debuted her first single from her upcoming third self-titled album: Britney. The song’s provocative title was “I’m A Slave 4 U.” Using shock value, she signaled to the world that she wasn’t a sweet little kid anymore. She was a bad, bad girl! To the horror of America’s parents, Britney was no longer an innocent little Disney role model. But she didn’t care. She didn’t want that role anymore.
Co-writing songs for the first time, Britney’s third album saw her most personal work yet. As she made the painful transition into adulthood, she sang songs such as “Overprotected” and “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman.”
But Britney’s shocking turn didn’t translate into sales. Her third album didn’t sell as much as expected. It seemed her core demographic—girls in high school and college—had grown up and moved on. Nevertheless, Britney continued on with her “bad girl” persona.
She broke into the acting world with her movie Crossroads in 2001. It was her first and only movie. Appropriately, it was a coming-of-age story. The movie had some adult themes. In it, Britney spoke of her desire to lose her virginity, as well as a friend’s unwanted pregnancy. Domestic abuse was also discussed. Unlike many musicians who try acting roles, Britney’s movie didn’t do well.
Justin Timberlake
After two years of dating, Britney split up with Justin Timberlake. A couple months later, her parents got divorced. Faster than she could realize, the 20-year-old Britney was now an adult—whether she liked it or not.
Justin famously spoke of the break-up in his classic pop song “Cry Me A River.” Timberlake’s music video insinuated that Britney had cheated on him, thus ruining their romance. Unfortunately for our Pop Princess, many fans sided with Justin.
Britney went on her Dream Within A Dream Tour, but it ended prematurely. During an incident in Mexico City, Spears gave the middle finger to some fans. After performing only five songs, she angrily stormed off the stage. That October, Britney announced a year-long hiatus. She indulged herself in parties, getting involved with Hollywood bad boys.
In The Zone
It was late 2003, and Britney had a new album to promote. Its name was In The Zone. Once again, she chose the MTV Video Music Awards to showcase herself.
Performing with Madonna and Christina Aguilera, Britney sang “Like A Virgin.” The three women came out in wedding dresses.
In a shocking moment, Britney and Madonna kissed on the lips! Photos of this hot lesbian moment made front pages across America.
For Britney, all press was good press! Her new album In the Zone became yet another smash hit. She became the first female artist to have four consecutive number-one albums. Now, Britney was back on top of the industry.
Britney released her hit song “Toxic,” which instantly became a pop classic. Through it, she was cleverly responding to changes in the public’s demands. Distancing herself from her early bubblegum pop, Spears was delivering the hardedge club dance tracks that everyone now wanted. That’s exactly what “Toxic” was.
Marriages
Struggling to find her adult identity, Britney was desperate to prove her independence. She entered a joke marriage to Jason Alexander in 2004, which lasted just 55 hours.
Spears became scorned by the media. But she struck back at them, releasing her music video for “Everytime.” In this provocative video, she drowns in a bathtub—representing the “drowning” of all the media’s attention.
Once again, Spears got married. This time, it was to a sketchy guy named Kevin Federline, one of her back-up dancers. Defending herself against public scrutiny, Britney co-produced the reality show Chaotic, which consisted of home-made videos of their romance. But the media relentlessly pursued Britney, mocking her parenting style. She was seen driving a car, where her baby wasn’t buckled in.
Again, it was a short marriage, ending in divorce in 2006. The public was relieved, but Britney was not. She spiraled further out of control. In an infamous photo, a bald-headed Britney was seen assaulting Kevin’s car with a green umbrella.
But Britney’s career was far from over! She released her fifth album Blackout in October of 2007. She debuted her hit single “Gimme More” at that year’s VMAs. Although panned by critics, it became a Top Ten hit across the Western world. She was placed under her infamous conservatorship in 2008. That year, she released her album Circus, which became that year’s fastest-selling album. Spears continued to release album and maintain a media presence all throughout the 2010s.
Free Britney
But starting in 2019, Britney’s fans on social media launched the #FreeBritney movement online, which called for an end to her conservatorship.
Finally, in the face of overwhelming public pressure, Britney got her freedom in 2021.
Her new tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me, was released in October of 2023. It became one of history’s biggest book deals. In its first week, the book sold over a million copies in America and another 2.4 million worldwide.
